A seguito del frequente riscontro di alterazioni sensoriali di olfatto e gusto nei pazienti con infezione da SARS-CoV-2, si è ritenuto necessario un approfondimento sulle principali caratteristiche dei disturbi e gli strumenti idonei all’identificazione presenti in letteratura scientifica, al fine di una adeguata valutazione medico-legale. Per ciò che concerne la valutazione della riduzione sensoriale, è possibile procedere ad esami olfattometrici che, tuttavia, richiedono collaborazione da parte del paziente con larga soggettività, a visita otorinolaringoiatrica o, in caso di danno nervoso centrale, a visita neurologica ed i consueti esami strumentali (TC-RM). Pertanto, la diagnosi e la valutazione del danno dovrebbero tener conto delle evidenze obiettivo/strumentali e delle caratteristiche generali e SARS-CoV-2 correlate di queste manifestazioni sintomatiche finalizzate a determinare la gravità e verosimiglianza della sussistenza del disturbo e sua conseguente valutazione.

Due to the common onset alterations of smell and taste in patients with SARSCoV- 2 infection, it has become necessary, in order to proceed to a medico-legal evaluation of damages, to investigate the scientific literature in search of the main features of these disorders as well as the most suitable instruments apt to their identification. Regarding the evaluation of sensory reduction, it is possible to carry out olfactometric tests, which however, require the patient’s collaboration and have a broad subjectivity. Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) examination is also required and, in case of central nervous damage, a neurological examination and the usual instrumental examinations (CT-MRI). Therefore, the diagnosis and assessment of the damage must take into account the objective evidence / tools and the related general and SARS-CoV-2 characteristics of these symptomatic manifestations aimed at determining the severity and likelihood of the existence of the disorder and its assessed evaluation.
