The author describes briefly the path that led from the first, embryonic measures protecting the health of workers - adopted at the dawn of the last century - to the current health surveillance and, more generally, the complex obligations faced by the competent doctor. Then, he proposes an analysis of the impact that technological progress on the one hand, and the demographic trend on the other hand, will have upon the tasks of the competent doctor and the way to perform them.
