summary

As is known, Volume 68 of IRAC 1997 has classified crystalline silica, inhaledin the form of quartz or cristobalite from occupational sources, as carcinogenicto humans (Group 1).Moreover, IARC specifies that, with regards to occupational risk, the respirablefraction of crystalline silica has a greater incidence due to the following: the presence of machines and equipment able to generate it, recent fractures, persistence of the fracture itself, duration and level.Carcinogenesis, therefore, is not found in all the industrial cases examined: infact, it can depend either on the intrinsic characteristics of SLC, on the externalfactors that have affected its biological activities, or on the different polymorphsof silica. This initial evidence determines the need for everyone to develop Research, with the aim to understand the toxicological differences of silica in the varioustypes of occupational exposure. For preventive purposes, moreover, the decision of ACGIH for 2006 is of relevance:with reference to crystalline Silica in the forms of alpha-quartz and cristobalite, the TLV-TWA is given as equal to 0.025 mg/m3, that is, half of theprevious value. In this context, the Network Italiano Silice (Italian Silica Network) works onbehalf of Prevenzione Primaria (Primary Prevention) by drafting guidelines forgood practices in the workplace; and takes into account the importance ofvoluntary agreements, related to the same subject, stipulated at European level. In addition to the above, NIS' objectives also include the following: improving environmental surveys with interlaboratory comparison of intercalibration online training and organization activities aimed to improve the quality ofhealth supervision, with particular reference to diagnostic appropriateness ofradiographic readings.
