I tassi più elevati (superiori a 20 casi per milione) sono osservati in alcuni paesi europei (Belgio, Olanda, Regno Unito), in Australia e in Nuova Zelanda. All’interno dei singoli paesi le aree con incidenza più alta corrispondono esattamente alle zone dove erano ubicati cantieri navali e industrie dell’amianto. Il tumore colpisce in larga prevalenza il sesso maschile e la fascia dietà tra 60 e 80 anni. I periodi di latenza intercorrenti tra inizio dell’esposizione all’asbesto e manifestazione del tumore variano tra 15 e oltre 70 anni, con medie generalmente sopra i 40 anni. I cofattori nella genesi del mesotelioma asbesto correlato sono scarsamente esplorati. È plausibile che deficit nelle difese immunitari e svolgano un ruolo chiave.

The estimated crude incidences of malignant mesothelioma show extreme variationsfrom one country to another. In a given country the areas with the highest incidences exactlycorrespond to the sites, in which shipyards and asbestos industries were located inthe past. Mesothelioma mainly affects men, aged between 60 and 80 years. Latencyperiods elapsing between first exposure to asbestos and tumor manifestation rangefrom 15 to over 70 years, with mean being over 40 years in various series. The cofactorsin the genesis of asbestos-related mesothelioma are scarcely explored.Plausibly, impairment in defense immune mechanisms plays a major role.
